About H and H Creations

Heather Gauthier - How I got here

In my late teens I fell in love with a blanket from JC Penny and I just had to have it.  So, I bought it.  Years later, I discovered that it was a Radiant Star, and it was called a Quilt not a blanket.  The next love was given and created by Aunt Laure.  She had me pick the colors and the blocks and she did the rest.  After it was finished (and I had forgotten about it), Aunt Laure came by with a surprise, a Quillow (a quilt that transforms into a pillow)!  It's in Fushia and White with an Irish Chain and Lemoyne Star for blocks.  I was in awe at my aunt's magical gift and then horrified at using it.  I believe she told me to use it and not let it sit, as that's what it was made for.  Let me tell you, it was used and after many trials and fails, it never became a pillow again!

A few years after receiving such a precious heirloom gift, Aunt Laure mentioned that she would be teaching a quilting class!  After showing interest and with her help, we went out and purchased the necessities for a beginner quilter...nothing too expensive and a few necessary tools - after all, would I stay with it?  My first day in class, my thought was, if I'm going to do this, it has to be useful.  I went with a King size pattern for Courtyard Steps. The pattern is perfect for a beginner (the size, not so much).  As a beginner, I had to learn the basics - to follow a pattern, sew straight, press (NOT IRON - yes, there's a difference), use a ruler, rotary cutter, cut and trim and do it all again until it's done.  Sounds simple right?  Haha, if I went small it would've been.  There were so many pieces!  But I managed and got it done. I still have and use it (it may not be in perfect shape, but it's well loved - as it's seen several family pets (yes, including puppy chewing stages!) and lots of regular washings (due to said family pets).  After the first quilt, I wanted to do another, and did several more.  It became clear that I was hooked!  The joke was on me, no one warned me on how addicting it was!

Since my first quilt 13-14 years ago, I've created beautiful masterpieces that were kept, donated, and custom done for commission.  As I look back on all my work, I can tell you the stories for how they came about.

For many years, I was asked why don't you sell your quilts?  The simple answer?  I was terrified.  As time went on, my heart just wasn't happy.  As I let question settle in, I would drive by small businesses making a go at - why couldn't I?  At risk of sounding cliche, I woke up feeling settled and knew the answer - H and H Creations was born.  It stands for Heather and Hall, Our Hearts are Happy when we Create.

In every Quilt, every stitch is sewn with love.  You can admire but we want them to be well loved (used!).
